What is the Associate in Science in Exercise Science degree?
The exercise science degree will prepare students for careers in entry level jobs in the fitness and health industry. This program is specifically designed to provide students with knowledge and leadership to become Certified Personal Trainers and/or Certified Group Fitness Instructors.
What is the cost of attending the Certificate Program?
There is no specific program cost. Fees will range for each student based on financial aid. After you complete each of the required core classes (KIN M16, M17, M18) you will have the option of taking the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) certifications at an additional cost. This is how you can become a personal trainer and/or group fitness instructor.
What kinds of jobs can I get with this degree?
Personal trainer, group fitness instructor, and other entry level jobs in the fitness and health industry. If seeking advanced careers (physical therapy, athletic training, PE teacher) within the exercise science and kinesiology fields then consider pursuing our AA-T in kinesiology. The AA-T better prepares you for transfer and advanced degree options.
What is the average salary for these jobs?
Hourly wages typically start around $20, but most facilities offer higher pay based upon more qualifications (certifications, advanced credentials), sessions serviced, and/or tenure within the company. Many employers offer commission and/or incentives for reaching production goals. Current labor information combines full-time and part-time professionals, personal training and group instruction, generalized among many small and large companies, which leads to a high degree of variability within this industry.
Are there any pre-requisite classes required?
There are no pre-requisites in the core classes (12 units, but elective units (6 units) are also required. Some of our elective courses such as Physiology do have a pre-requisite.
Can I take the classes during evenings and weekends?
AS Exercise Science classes are offered in the fall, spring, and summer. During COVID-19 times most of our classes are taught online which allows for some flexibility. When things get back to normal, classes will be offered in person and generally in the morning/afternoon.
Can I work part time or full time while I attend classes for this Associate Degree?
Yes! This degree requires 60 total units, but you complete the degree on your own time. If you have a busy or complicated schedule it could take longer to complete the degree, but that's totally fine. Academic Counselors can help plan out when to take classes and help establish a realistic education plan.
How long is the program?
This degree is set up for you to complete in two years if you are a full-time student. This AS degree requires 60 total units.
I am an undocumented student, and I don't have a social security number. Can I apply?
Yes! Once you've been accepted to Moorpark College and cleared for registration you can begin taking courses towards your AS Exercise Science. Be sure to meet with a counselor to ensure the right course selection. If you are seeking advanced degrees, certifications, and/or licensures, there will be some limitations without a social security number. Be sure to meet with an academic counselor to discuss your options.
I am an international student, and I don't have a social security number. Can I apply?

Exercise Science: Fitness Specialist Certificate
What is the Fitness Specialist Certificate?
To earn a Certificate of Achievement in Exercise Science: Fitness Specialist, students complete 18 or more specified units. The Fitness Specialist Certificate of Achievement will prepare students for careers in entry level jobs in the fitness and health industry. This program provides applied knowledge and leadership skills necessary for students to become Personal Trainers and/or Group Fitness Instructors. In addition to acting as a primary hiring qualification for major fitness employers, the earning of this certificate may also serve as a means for current fitness professionals to earn wage increases and career advancement.
What kinds of jobs can I get with this Certificate?
Entry level fitness jobs: Physical Therapy Aide, Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor.
