RUN, HIDE, and FIGHT if there’s an Active Shooter!

RUN:
If there is an accessible escape path, attempt to evacuate the premises. 

Be sure to:
• Have an escape route and plan in mind
• Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow
• Leave your belongings behind
• Help others escape, if possible
• Prevent individuals from entering an area where the active shooter may be
• Keep your hands visible
• Follow the instructions of any police officers
• Do not attempt to move wounded people
• Call 911 when you are safe\

HIDE:
If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide where the active shooter is less likely to find you.

Your hiding place should:
• Be out of the active shooter’s view
• Provide protection if shots are fired in your direction (i.e., an office with a closed and locked door)
• Not trap you or restrict your options for movement

To prevent an active shooter from entering your hiding place:
• Lock the door
• Blockade the door with heavy furniture

If the active shooter is nearby:
• Lock the door
• Silence your cell phone and/or pager
• Turn off any source of noise (i.e., radios, televisions)
• Hide behind large items (i.e., cabinets, desks)
• Remain quiet

If evacuation and hiding out are not possible:
• Remain calm
• Dial 911, if possible, to alert police to the active shooter’s location
• If you cannot speak, leave the line open and allow the dispatcher to listen

FIGHT:
As a last resort, and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt and/or incapacitate the active shooter by:
• Acting as aggressively as possible against him/her
• Throwing items and improvising weapons
• Yelling

What phones would you use to call 911?

Office phones require you to be logged into the desktop computer to make outgoing calls using Microsoft Teams. YOUR CELL PHONE MAY THE BEST OPTION!

Where is the closest emergency equipment?

Fire extinguisher

Every room should have a fire extinguisher, or one close to the room in a hallway OR in a common workspace.

Fire alarm

The red fire alarm pull handle is located on a wall within or close to your workspace, classroom, or office.

AED

The AED can be found in a white display cabinet mounted on the wall within common hallways and workspaces. A triangular sign is mounted on the wall above the AED.

First aid kit

Do you have a first aid kit?  What is in the kit? Is it readily accessible?

Evacuation chair/stair chair (GREEN)

The stair chair is used for evacuating people from a building.  It is stored in a large green box mounted on a wall within an office space or common. DO NOT REMOVE THE CHAIR! To prevent theft, the chair is attached to an alarm system.

“Shelter In Place” bucket

The black 5-gallon bucket has white writing on the side. Is there a bucket in your workspace, or classroom? This bucket would serve as an emergency toilet during prolonged periods required to shelter in place. Use the plastic sheeting for a privacy barrier.

Evacuation Point for your class or office

Evacuation points are marked in Yellow on the Campus Emergency Map (on the wall of the classroom). The evacuation points should be used in the event of an emergency such as an earthquake or structure fire. Do you know where to go if asked to evacuate your office or classroom?
