Set in the 1980's, "Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes Part I, Millennium Approaches", is considered one of the first plays to address the AIDS epidemic. With a plethora of characters such as real-life McCarthyite lawyer Roy Cohn, Ethel Rosenberg, supernatural characters, deceased persons and storylines that often intersect, the play is a complex, at times metaphorical, and symbolic look at AIDS and homosexuality in New York City. It has been described as "a turning point in the history of gay drama, the history of American drama, and of American literary culture."
